PETER
HOWARD - HEADMASTER RWS (1963-1977)

Peter Howard, Headmaster of The Royal Wolverhampton School 1963-1977
has died in Bournemouth after a short illness. He was 94. He graduated
from London University and then saw war service in the RAF as meteorological
officer based at Foggia. There, he met and later married Kay. They
were due to celebrate 65 years of marriage in August this year.
He became teacher of Maths, Physics and Chemistry in a number of
independent schools where he and Kay ran boarding houses. He wrote
a science text book and designed new laboratories. He was greatly
interested in sport, especially hockey and cricket.
He became Head of the Royal School in 1963 undertaking the onerous
task of steering it from being an orphanage to an independent school.
During his time the school expanded and new science labs were built.
In 1969 he welcomed Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother,
to the opening of the new science and dining facilities in a building
named Clarence House. He is remembered as a firm leader and disciplinarian.
He took a leading role in establishing the School’s Masonic
Lodge.
He retired in 1977 and moved to Poole where he enjoyed a long retirement,
caring for Kay in her long illness. He is survived by Kay, daughter
Jane and grandchildren. The funeral took place in Bournemouth on
14th May.
