ORA v RWS 1st XI Football -
Saturday 27th March 2010

Not wanting to avoid the stereotypical expectation, this year's football match proved to be a case of the fit young athletes of the school eventually outlasting their slightly older (but arguably more handsome) counterparts. Unfortunately, due to last minute changes, the Old Royals were a little short this year, with only nine players eventually taking to the field. Great thanks go to the school for assisting in providing a couple of players to fill the small void that was left (it was hard enough work with the full eleven players)! Despite initial worries of spies in the camp, the lads worked tremendously hard for the Old Royals and were vital to the decent end result.

The game started with a hefty proportion of the possession being held by the school side, with the wide players causing particular trouble to the Old Royals side. However, following a long range strike giving the school the lead, the Old Royals woke up and gave as good as we got. From there on out, the game was a battle of 'you score one, we'll score one', as the score went back and forth like a tennis ball at Wimbledon (minus the rain). At 4-4, with the clock running out and no fresh substitutes to take the field, the fitness really started to tell, and only some fine goalkeeping and steely grit (or luck) was keeping the inevitable conclusion at bay. Unfortunately, the final moments of the game saw the school take a 5-4 lead, and the Old Royals had run out of fuel. And so the game finished with a very close one goal victory for the school.

Congratulations to the school on another win, but credit is due to everyone who made an appearance for the Old Royals. Bearing in mind that every year this team comprises of players who've either never played together, never met or haven't played alongside each other for 'many moons', any close result really is a cracking achievement. Thanks again to all, with a few more players next year we may well manage that elusive victory once more.
